May Unemployment Steady from April

Tennessee's unemployment rate for the month of May was 5.4 percent, unchanged from April figures, according to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Unemployment in the state was 5.7 percent in May of last year.

National unemployment dropped slight to 4.6 percent from April's figure of 4.7 percent.

Since April, the leisure and hospitality sector rose 4,200 jobs, construction added 2,000 jobs and trade, transportation and utilities employment increased by 1,900 jobs. There were decreases in professional, scientific and technical services of 2,500 jobs and 3,900 jobs in state government and local educational services.

From May 2005 to 2006, trade, transportation and utilities increased by 10,200. Jobs in leisure and hospitality have risen by 8,700 and health services by 7,200 in the same period. Employment decreased in manufacturing by 5,200, beverage stores by 1,500 and federal government jobs by 700 in the last year.
