BOSTON - A nuclear power plant specialist who a judge says carefully orchestrated his times of unemployment to avoid paying child support must pay 119-thousand dollars to his former wife and two children.

Robert Croak, then of Arlington, was ordered by a judge to pay 970 dollars a week in child support. A year later, he asked to pay less because he was unemployed.

In 2003 a judge ruled Croak owed 119-thousand dollars, based on money he received in wages, premature I-R-A withdrawals, a settlement and an inheritance.

Croak's lawyers appealed, saying the judge overstated his income.

But the state Appeals Court denied those claims, saying in today's ruling that , Croak had a history of not giving an adequate picture of his finances.
