Low Unemployment Rate Makes Hiring Difficult

Low employment rates are making it harder to fill open positions around the city, which was the case at the Empire Mall's job fair this week. The Empire Mall is one of the most visited spots in the state. But many employers aren't staffed to help all their customers.

The mall's Marketing Manager Christine Spoo says, "One of the reasons why we're of course doing this is because its so tough to find employees right now and so its been a little slow and its been difficult to get those applications in."

Spoo says filling positions isn't just difficult in the summer.

"Well I just think it's a year round thing in Sioux Falls right now, our unemployment rate is so low and we're in such a great economy its just tough to find employees anywhere you go," Spoo says.

Spoo says the low unemployment rate in Sioux Falls means less people filling out applications, which can be a good thing.

"It's, well, it's a good and bad problem obviously it's great for Sioux Falls and it's great for the economy but it makes it tough for retailers and I think if you drive all over Sioux Falls its something you're gonna see is help wanted signs everywhere you go," Spoo says.

And although the low unemployment rate does present some problems, officials say for the most part, it's a good problem to have. The latest unemployment rate in South Dakota is 3.3 percent, which is well below the national average which trends above 4 percent.
