Local Numbers Down for Feb Unemployment

Mendocino County's unemployment rate remained steady in February at 6 percent, 1.1 percent below the February 2005 rate of 7.1 percent.

The figures, released in a report by the California Employment Development Department, show that local unemployment in February was higher than both the statewide rate of 5.4 percent and 5.1 percent nationwide.

Surrounding county rates included 7.8 percent for Lake, 6.0 percent for Humboldt and 4.3 percent for Sonoma.

Total Mendocino industry employment grew by 740 (2.4 percent) between February 2005 and February 2006, ending the period with 32,060 total jobs.

Job growth occurred in several job categories, including natural resources and mining, construction, financial activities, leisure and hospitality, and government. Year-over job losses occurred in farming, information and professional and business services.

Construction led industry gainers adding 230 jobs (17.7 percent) over the year. Manufacturing gained 130 (4.3 percent) to reach 3,170 total jobs. The professional and business services sector led decliners dropping 60 jobs over the year.
