The Kansas City area’s unemployment rate was 8.9 percent in July, up from 8.7 percent in June and 6 percent in July 2008, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics said Tuesday.
The figures are not seasonally adjusted.
In a release, the bureau said that 139 metropolitan areas reported unemployment rates of at least 10 percent, up from 14 areas a year earlier. Sixty-five areas reported rates of less than 7 percent, down from 286 areas a year earlier.
Among the 19 areas with unemployment rates of at least 15 percent in July, eight were in California, and five were in Michigan.
For the seventh-consecutive month, all 372 metropolitan areas had higher unemployment rates in July than in July 2008.
The national unemployment rate, not seasonally adjusted, was 9.7 percent in July.
