U.S. Rep. Trent Franks criticized President Obama’s economic policies Tuesday pointing to fourth-quarter projections of 10 percent unemployment and large budget deficits.

The west side Republican walked into the national spotlight Monday saying he wants Obama to produce his birth certificate proving he was born in the U.S.

“The same administration that said unemployment would not surpass 8 percent, if Americans would merely endure the president’s reckless spending on a $787 billion so-called ‘stimulus’ bill, is now projecting an unemployment rate of 10 percent for the fourth quarter of 2009, and an average unemployment rate of 9.8 percent for 2010,” Franks said in a statement.

Franks and other Arizona Republicans, including Sen. Jon Kyl, opposed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and have been skeptical of its economic impact.

The U.S. employment rate hit 9.4 percent in July, up from 7.6 percent in January when Obama took office and 4.7 percent in November 2007. The end of 2007 is pegged as the beginning of the recession.
