Expiring Unemployment

Coosa Valley News

An estimated 200,000 people have lost their unemployment benefits so far in October. While the House has passed a bill to extend benefits another 13 weeks, the bill is still tied up in the Senate.

One issue there is whether to limit the extension to states, like Georgia and Alabama, with high unemployment rates. One version extends the limit in states with unemployment rates under 8.5% to six weeks.

Senate Democrats are pushing to pass a bill by the 1st of November.

The advocacy group, the National Employment Law Project, projects that roughly 1.3 million people will lose their unemployment benefits by the 1st of January.
