DAYTON - Workers 55 and older make up a big share of the labor pool and many expect to work into retirement, but many are finding it difficult to land work in the current economy.

Of the 14.9 million unemployed, more than 2.2 million are 55 or older. Nearly half of them have been unemployed six months or longer, according to the Labor Department. Unemployment in the group - 7.3 percent - is at a record, more than double what it was when the latest recession started, The New York Times reported Monday.

In 2000, 13 percent of the U.S. work force was 55 or older, according to figures from the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. The figure is expected to reach 17 percent, according to WiseWorker.com, an employment website for workers older than 50.

George Zeller, a Cleveland-area economist, said this recession has been so severe that workers across nearly all wage groups and demographics have suffered.

A career fair aimed at workers who are 50 and older is slated for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Nutter Center. The event, sponsored by AARP, EmploymentGuide.com and WiseWorker.com, is open to all ages.

Rebecca Luzadis, an associate professor of management at Miami University, said employers may judge job candidates based on inappropriate criteria such as how well that person will fit in among younger workers.
