There was more job growth in the Buffalo/Niagara Falls area last month but any increase did not include the private sector.

The state Department of Labor reported Thursday that nonfarm jobs were up 2,100, or 0.4 percent, but the number of private sector jobs was unchanged from September of last year.

The unemployment rate also climbed to 6.1 percent in September 2008, compared with 6 percent in August and 4.5 percent in the year-over-year period.

In the Rochester area, there are fewer jobs across the board and unemployment went up. Labor department figures showed that in the past year, the number of nonfarm jobs there has decreased by 5,300, or 1 percent, while private-sector jobs fell by 4,300, or 1 percent.

That metropolitan area’s unemployment rate was 5.9 percent last month, up from 5.7 percent in August and 4.3 percent in September 2007.

New York state’s private-sector employment decreased over the month by 1,600, or less than 0.1 percent, to 7.25 million. The September 2008 state unemployment rate, after seasonal adjustment, was 5.8 percent, which was unchanged from August.
