A Jackson plant is only a week away from shutting down. Workers at a big-three supplier in Jackson brace themselves for the inevitable. Officials at the TRW plant there have released say they will cease production next Friday.
TRW officials were hoping that between 30 and 40 plant workers would take voluntary layoffs. Already, more than that are calling it their last day. TRW Automotive workers found out in the winter that the end was looming, but Union President Andrew Nastally says hearing an official shutdown date makes his members' nightmare a reality.
Andrew Nastally, Union President: "I can see it in the shop, with different people, they're feeling stressed."
44 workers were laid off. Nastally says thirty of those workers chose to leave.
Andrew Nastally: "They don't want to stick around and see basically the end of their lifestyle, what they're accustomed to."
But work inside the plant goes on. Nastally says those who remain are going above and beyond producing break parts for the big three.
Andrew Nastally: "I don't think you could've found a better group of people to close this plant."
Easing employee concerns, Michigan Works has been inside the plant, helping workers with their job search.
Andrew Nastally: "That's been a tremendous help. It's helped people get resumes, and get ready for the unemployment."
Though workers there express great sadness over their plant closure, TRW officials tell us that the workers have been conducting themselves as professionals to the very end.
