Wood Rodgers Inc., a Sacramento-based engineering firm with 10 offices in the western United States, has laid off about 10 percent of its staff, a company executive confirmed.

The cutbacks result from a slowdown in housing developments for the coming year, vice president and co-founder Mark Rodgers said.

"We're just not seeing those large, master-plan communities being formed," Rodgers said. "That's what we do a lot of."

He characterized the layoffs as an "adjustment" to cope with the housing slump. He said the company is still healthy and has plenty of work on public projects.

He declined to state the number of employees that were laid off. Earlier this year, the company reported a national staff of 459 workers. A little more than half of those employees were in the local office.

Wood Rodgers, formed in 1997 and located at 3301 C St., has ranked as one of the fastest-growing companies in the Sacramento region for the past several years. The company also topped national lists for fast-growing engineering firms.

Its revenue increased 78 percent between 2003 and 2005, to $59.3 million last year.

The company has opened six offices in the past three years, according to its Web site. Rodgers said the layoffs will not threaten that expansion.

Wood Rodgers provides civil engineering, land planning, mapping, surveying and other services.
