OAK RIDGE, TN - The manager of the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant warned his 4,500-member work force of possible layoffs if Congress fails to approve a new federal budget on time.

George Dials told employees in an internal memo that managers are trying to quickly study the potential impact.

The Y-12 plant makes components for every warhead in the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal and is the nation's primary storehouse for bomb-grade uranium.

Congress has until Oct. 1, 2007, the start of the new fiscal year, to pass a new budget or Y-12, and other Department of Energy nuclear weapons facilities will likely have to operate under spending guidelines of a continuing budget resolution.
