Wisconsin Public Service Corp. warned workers that it plans to lay off members of Local 310 of the International Union of Operating Engineers a year from now.
“It would be a significant number of the union work force if things continue to spiral downward,” said utility spokesman Kerry Spees. But it's possible that layoffs could be avoided if the economy recovers, he added.
The Green Bay electric and natural gas is required under its union contract to provide workers with a 12-month advance notice of any potential layoff.
The notice stems from uncertainty in the economy, declining electricity sales, and declining requests to connect electric and natural gas service because of the construction downturn, the utility said.
