HARTFORD - United Technologies Corp. executives say 1,500 Connecticut employees are among the 11,600 being laid off as it reduces its global work force.

The company says the markets for commercial aerospace and global construction have worsened since December as worldwide construction and aerospace orders slowed.

Chief Executive Louis Chenevert told investors Thursday that Pratt & Whitney and Hamilton Sundstrand will likely take the hits, which will come primarily among white-collar workers.

UTC now employs 26,000 in Connecticut.

The presidents of Pratt and Hamilton say cost-cutting measures will also include furloughs, merit pay deferrals, overtime reductions and hiring freezes. ۩
