SPARROWS POINT, MD. - The union president at the Sparrows Point steel mill near Baltimore says more than 1,000 workers could be laid off under an idling plan by the plant's owner.

Russian steelmaker Severstal plans to idle the main operations at Sparrows Point for the rest of the year.

Union president John Cirri said in an e-mail to members that 1,000 to 1,200 hourly workers could lose their jobs.

Severstal spokeswoman Marika Diamond says the company has not determined how many people will be laid off.

Severstal announced Tuesday that Sparrows Point and a plant in Wheeling, Mich., will remain idled until market conditions improve.

Union officials have said Severstal plans to sell the Maryland and Michigan plants along with a third one in West Virginia. Severstal has not commented on those reports.
