Just weeks before Christmas, hundreds of Middle Tennessee workers found out they'll soon be out of a job. Three auto industry plants announced job cuts.

The Peterbilt plant in Madison delivered the news to 667 of their 1,200 workers that their jobs would be eliminated beginning Jan. 29. The Associated Press reported that number, but the company has not confirmed it.

A company spokesperson said the layoffs are due to an anticipated downtown in demand for tractor trailer trucks because of some new environmental regulations.

Peterbilt laid off about 600 workers in 2002.

Worthington Precision Metals in Williamson County also announced Tuesday that it's laying off 117 employees in January. One economy expert said the company's downturn could be linked to the dwindling of its largest client, the troubled Ford Motor Company.

Ford plans to lose 30,000 jobs in the next six years. Worthington's plant closing in Franklin is said to be permanent.

In Spring Hill, trouble is on the horizon for the Saturn plant. The currently produced vehicle the Vue will be shifted to another manufacturing site, while production of the Ion will be dissolved altogether on March 31.

On that date, Saturn will go into a 12 to 18-month shut-down, sending nearly 5,000 employees into temporary unemployment.

Saturn's mini van was scrapped last week, which leaves the fate of the plant in limbo.
