April 1, 2009 Sun Microsystems said it is laying off 1,500 workers companywide, including nine in Tampa.

The job cuts are part of a plan, announced last fall, to lay off 18 percent of its work force, or up to 6,000 jobs, a company spokeswoman said.

In a notice sent to the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation, Sun Microsystems also said it is laying off 11 workers in Fort Lauderdale, three in Jacksonville, 12 in Orlando and one in Tallahassee.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based high-end computer maker (NASDAQ: JAVA) said last fall that the cuts were part of a corporate restructure necessitated by falling demand.

Sun Microsystems is reportedly in discussions over a reported $6.5 billion acquisition offer from IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM).
