Sun Country Airlines sent an e-mail to employees Wednesday night warning them it may have to make substantial layoffs or shut down.

The Mendota Heights-based airline sent the announcement in order to comply with the federal WARN Act, which requires employers to notify workers of large-scale layoffs or a company’s closing 60 days beforehand. However, Sun Country said in a statement that it has “no plans to shut down or institute a major layoff,” and that it sent the letter as a contingency measure “in light of recent developments” at its parent company, Petters Group Worldwide.

Minnetonka-based Petters Group’s former CEO, Tom Petters, is under investigation for fraud. The airline has struggled financially and had hoped to secure a loan from Petters, before he resigned due to the investigation.
