Employees at the three Caterpillar Logistics Services Inc. locations in Lafayette will have their work hours reduced by at least 50 percent through a series of "rolling layoffs" that are planned to begin Aug. 24.
Caterpillar Inc. said the action, designed to bring production levels and costs in line with demand, is being taken in response to the global recession.
"No employees are being placed on layoff as a result of this decision," said Doug Brunton, human resources representative, in a notice filed with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
The notice said 158 workers will be affected and the new work schedule "may last for more than six months."
Cat Logistics provides supply chain solutions and services to its parent company, Caterpillar Inc., and to more than 60 other corporations.
The company is headquartered in Morton, Ill., and has more than 110 offices and facilities in 23 countries.
The Lafayette operations that will be affected by the rolling layoffs are on County Road 500 East, South 30th Street and Kepner Drive.
The rolling layoffs have a defined period, such as one week per month, when employees will be laid off.
But, the company said, a clearly defined return to work date also is scheduled.
"Caterpillar Logistics Services Inc. is making these decisions in order to best position the company for long-term success and competitiveness in the global market," said a statement from the company.
"The use of rolling layoffs also is intended to reduce the number of employees impacted by indefinite layoffs.
"Depending on business, more rolling layoffs may be required as the year unfolds."
