The Rite Aid drug store chain announced the immediate layoffs of corporate employees Wednesday.
Karen Rugen, company spokesperson said, “today the company eliminated 44 positions in the greater Harrisburg Area. That’s less than 3 percent of the corporate office workforce.”
Rugen said that Rite Aid added a lot of positions when acquired the Brooks Eckerds Chains in June 2007 because of the corporate integration process.
She said Rite Aid has, “kept many of those positions. But now that the Brooks Eckerds integration is nearly complete it was time to right size the corporate office for managing our business going forward. Which isn’t unusual when you finish a major acquisition and integration.”
The layoffs were all of corporate employees at various offices around Harrisburg. Rite Aid associates effected by the layoff received severance pay and out placement services, to assist them in finding new employment, Rugen noted.
With the acquisition, Rite Aid acquired 1,850 drug stores and six distribution centers.
“Now instead of 3,300 stores we’re 5,000 stores,” Rugen said. “But now that the integration is complete it was time to right size the corporate office going forward.”
