PULASKI -- Pulaski Furniture Corp. will close one of its plants and lay off about 119 employees in December.
The town of Pulaski will work with the Virginia Employment Commission, New River Community College, the congressional office of Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, and area employers to assist laid-off workers in the areas of benefits, retraining and other jobs, said John White, the town's economic development director.
Mayor Charles Wade, Town Manager John Hawley and White met Thursday with Spencer Rygas, the company's vice president of administration and general counsel, regarding the closing of Plant 12.
White noted in an e-mail that Plant 12 is one of the company's most modern manufacturing areas, which will allow it to be marketed to other manufacturers in the specialized production of wood products.
Pulaski Furniture, one of the last manufacturing facilities in downtown Pulaski, celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. It started as a manufacturer of bedroom and dining room furniture, branched out into curio cabinets and other pieces and, in 1985, acquired the Ridgeway Clock Co. and added grandfather, wall and mantel clocks to its line.
In 1997, it restructured its product lines, closed its upholstery division and, in 2004, sold off the Ridgeway Clock division to concentrate on its core products.
