Georgia-Pacific Corporation says about 300 workers at its plywood operations in Crossett are being laid off.
The Atlanta-based company said today that about 100 were laid off today, another 100 would be laid off tomorrow, and another 100 on Sunday, all based on seniority.
Teresa Walsh, public affairs manager for GP's Crossett Operations, told the Ashley County Ledger weekly newspaper at Hamburg that the company knows this will be a difficult time for workers to have to endure downtime. But she said the company had to take the step of suspending production at one mill based on wood supply and operating costs. She said the layoffs would be re-evaluated in mid-January.
The company's plywood operations at Crossett had employed 709 workers before the layoffs.
