Stoughton Trailers, LLC informed the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and the mayors of the cities of Brodhead, Evansville and Stoughton that it may engage in large layoffs at its facilities located in those cities. Layoffs may occur no sooner than June 22, 2007. All of Stoughton Trailers’ approximately 1,126 employees received notice of the potential layoffs. The reason for the notice is the downturn in the over-the-road semi-trailer industry. The trailer industry is tied closely to the trucking industry and the general economy. Softness in the economy has led to a decrease in freight hauling, which resulted in reduced trailer demand. It is hoped that conditions will improve soon to alleviate the need to keep the option of layoffs open if business conditions do not improve soon.
