New York experienced a drop in the number of mass layoffs from June to July, but the number of affected workers increased, according to a new U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report.

The number of New York businesses that laid off 50 or more employees fell from 15 in June to five in July.

The number of New York workers let go in July, however, was higher than in June -- climbing to 11,886 from 7,681 in the previous month.

Both national figures were down in July from June, continuing a decline from May, when the number of U.S. workers let go in mass layoffs had reached its highest level in 14 years of recordkeeping.

There were 2,157 mass layoffs nationally in July, down from 2,763 in June and 2,933 in May.

Those July mass layoffs nationwide resulted in 206,791 new filings for unemployment, down from 279,231 in June and 312,880 in May.

The industries with the largest number of workers let go in June mass layoffs on a national basis were school employees (20,769), temporary-help services (20,377) and construction-machinery manufacturing (13,914).
