WASHINGTON, D.C. – Workers in some North Carolina communities hit hard by automotive industry layoffs will get help from the the federal government. The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded the North Carolina Department of Commerce a $2.4 million grant for the effort.
The grant funding is intended to aid 1,620 North Carolina workers affected by mass layoffs at Freightliner Trucks at a plant near Salisbury and Jevic Transportation in Concord. "This $2.4 million grant will provide these North Carolina workers with important re-employment services to help them find and succeed in new jobs," says U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao.
According to the Department of Labor, affected workers will have access to a full array of dislocated worker services, including a nation-wide network of career centers to prepare for new jobs, career counseling services, and supportive services like child care and transportation. For workers needing to upgrade their skills, training for high-growth and high-demand occupations will also be available.
