Forty-three employees may be laid off in January at International Truck and Engine's truck service center in Springfield.

Last week the company issued a WARN notice, or a Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification which is required by the state 60 days in advance of mass layoffs. Navistar International Corp. (NYSE: NAV), the parent company of International, said the anticipated layoffs have to do with a projected decline in 2007 truck orders because of new emissions standards.

Roy Wiley, a spokesman for Navistar, said that until the orders come in, it will not be clear exactly how many positions will be cut, though the maximum is 43. The layoffs will be effective Jan. 2.

Charlie Hayden, president of local United Auto Workers 402, which is one of two unions representing workers at International, said the service center employs a total of 93 workers. He said that while the news was expected, it's still disappointing and affects more positions that he had hoped it would.

"It's a cycle and the cycle is entering a downward swing," Hayden said. "If they laid off too many hopefully they'll see they had a greater need and call back some back. These people have worked here for many years and we've been through it before and we'll probably go through it again."

The 43 positions that could be eliminated have been identified: 39 journeyman mechanics, three positions in the controlman and vehicle storage area, and one stock and controlman position.

Warrenville, Ill.-based Navistar makes International brand heavy-duty trucks, as well as buses and engines. It employs 1,300 workers at its truck assembly plant in Springfield.
