Two hundred more Maytag factory workers in Newton left their jobs today for the last time. Back in it's heyday the Newton-based company had over three thousand jobs. Today's cuts leave the workforce at under 700.

Workers leaving today seemed to fall into one of three categories... indifferent, sad, or angry. During the two thirty shift change Friday it was a mix of workers leaving for the last time and workers who will be laid off in September or October of next year until new owner Whirlpool closes the plant for good late in 2007.

One press operator told Channel 13 that laid off plant workers were getting severance packages based on their years of service. He was expecting to get just under ten thousand dollars for his twelve years of service.

With the latest round of layoffs coming three days before Christmas, most workers said they weren't upset with the timing because they had received several months notice. A lot of the workers were hopeful for their futures because they can take advantage of federal assistance that can be used as tuition for college or university in the United States.

One man said he was going to finish his teaching degree, another is starting classes to be an ambulance EMT.
