MOBERLY - The business community is sad but not surprised that the DURA Automotive Systems plant is going to lay off 250 jobs at its local site this year.

DURA, with a workforce of 400 in Moberly, announced Wednesday that they would cut 250 jobs as part of their restructuring efforts. This plan also involves the closing of at least 10 facilities world wide.

"We are very sympathetic to those employees who will be impacted by this layoff. Our community continues to work hard to grow and attract new jobs to the area, and unfortunate situations like this, that we have no control over, sometimes overshadow that good," said Executive Director of Moberly Area Chamber of Commerce Debbie Miller.

Dale Sosniecki, owner of the gift shop Coach Light, said he had already expected this for some time.

"We have got employees whose spouses work there. We are not surprised to know it happens. We know that from the other plants and with the recession coming," said Sosniecki.

According to Andy Szczepanski, owner of Jewelry & Curio, this job transition is a national trend.

"It's a tragedy. But offshore and down Mexico, people are working for much less money. The U.S. is suffering. People are not going to do skill trade," said Szczepanski. "The U.S. used to be number one in the world for engineers. Now people are going into computer jobs. For this community, losing 250 jobs is horrible. This is a blue-collar town; the impact on the area is significant."
