Michelin North America announced this week it will lay off 350 employees from its BFGoodrich tire manufacturing plant in Opelika, Ala., effective? Oct. 2.

The company announced earlier this year that the plant would close Oct. 31.

“This is part of our normal ramp down procedure,” Lynn Mann, director of external communications for MNA, said. “We tried to share as much detail with our employees as possible. They knew we would be ramping down toward the closure on Oct. 31.”

Mann said the 350 employees, roughly one-third of the total at the plant, were informed by their management teams Tuesday.

She said she was unsure whether there would be another round of layoffs before the plant closes.

“I don’t have the details on that, but we’ll be ramping down as we move closer to Oct. 31,” she said.

When the employees leave next week, the plant will move from running three shifts five days a week to running? one shift five days a week, she said.
