Ceco Building Systems has notified its employees that another round of layoffs is in the works at its manufacturing plant on U.S. 45 North in Columbus.
The company this week issued a "Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification" to the employees.
While the company has not said how many layoffs are planned or when they would take place, the U.S. Department of Labor requires the issuance of the notification when a company prepares to reduce at least 33 percent of its full-time, more than 100-person work force for a period of more than six months.
Ceco designs, builds and manufactures materials for the construction industry. With its headquarters in Columbus, the company has 39 manufacturing facilities in 17 states and Canada and Mexico. It currently employs about 175 people at its operations in Mississippi.
Ceco Vice President and Southern Region General Manager Roger Burlingame said in a statement that the notice was sent to "all plant employees and some office personnel in response to the extended and significant contraction of the nonresidential construction market."
A woman answering the phone at the Columbus facility said Wednesday that Burlingame was out of the office and unavailable for comment.
The company has had layoffs totaling 67 workers between September 2008 and February 2009.
Recently, another business in Lowndes County announced layoffs. The 25-year-old Holcim cement plant in Artesia has announced it will close in late May or early June, leaving 113 employees out of work.
The decision to mothball the plant came as Holcim, a global company based in Switzerland, reported a 12 percent decline in cement deliveries in the U.S., a trend the company linked to declining construction projects throughout the country.
