SEATTLE — Microsoft Corp. is completing most of the 5,000 job cuts announced this year faster than planned and might cut more, chief executive Steve Ballmer said.
"We will continue to closely monitor the impact of the economic downturn on the company and if necessary, take further actions on our cost structure including additional job eliminations," Ballmer said in an e-mail to employees.
Microsoft announced its first companywide job cuts in January in an effort to save $1.5 billion a year as the recession cools the demand for software.
Microsoft had planned to finish the cuts by mid-2010 but sped up the process to reduce uncertainty for workers, Ballmer said.
