WASHINGTON – More than 10,000 Hoosiers lost their jobs last month in mass layoffs – temporary or permanent firings of at least 50 people – an increase in the number of new filings for unemployment insurance benefits from April.

The 86 mass-layoff actions resulted in the unemployment of 10,416 workers, the Labor Department reported Tuesday. In April, 9,659 Hoosiers lost their jobs in mass layoffs.

Nationwide, employers took 2,933 mass-layoff actions in May that cost 312,800 workers their jobs, the government said.

In the past year, Hoosier employers reported 921 mass layoffs; 108,885 workers filed unemployment insurance claims.

The state’s unemployment rate in May was 10.6 percent, up from 9.9 percent in April and double the 5.3 percent a year ago.

Nationwide, the manufacturing sector accounted for 37 percent of all mass layoffs and 43 percent of affected workers in May.

The number of manufacturing-sector workers who filed unemployment claims was greatest in transportation equipment and machinery, two categories that dominate the northeast Indiana manufacturing industry.

Forty-four states and D.C. let go of more people due to mass layoffs in May than in the same month a year ago, with the largest increases reported in Michigan, California, Pennsylvania and Illinois.
