In the first eight months of 2009, the number of new jobless claims because of mass layoff actions -- 2,162,202 -- created a new record for the mass layoff series.

Also a new record for the January-August period was the number of mass layoff events -- 21,184.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics defines mass layoff actions as those affecting at least 50 workers from a single employer.

The number of mass layoffs in August increased from July, a disappointing reversal.

There were 900 mass layoff events in the manufacturing sector, making it the largest contributor to the 2,690 layoff actions taken by U.S. employers last month.

During the 21 months since the recession begain in December 2007, there have been 44,669 mass layoff events affecting 4,556,636 workers, the bureau said.
