EAST FLAT ROCK - GE Lighting Systems says it plans to reassign or cut nearly 300 workers at a western North Carolina plant as the company transfers some of its operations to outside suppliers.
Plant workers tell The Times-News of Hendersonville that about 200 workers will be laid off or reassigned by February. They also say an additional 85 temporary workers will lose their jobs.
The company says in a news release that to improve its ability to compete in the fixture industry, the company will outsource die cast production, ballast components, sheet metal and part of the assembly operation to suppliers.
GE Lighting Systems says about 680 people work at the East Flat Rock plant. Employees will get a chance to offer ideas for an alternative to the proposal.
