The decision by Corry-based Erie Plastics to lay off nearly half of its work force is a blow to the region, the Corry area and most painfully for the workers themselves.

It means that the lives of 192 workers and their families are suddenly tossed into turmoil.

The job losses affect the entire plant, where plastic lids and other plastic parts are made. The layoffs involve 49 salaried employees and 143 hourly workers. Before the layoff announcement, the plant employed 359 workers.

The reasons behind the layoffs came down to economics. Erie Plastics completed contracts with a major consumer-products company, leaving the company with an able work force but without that work. As company officials put it in brief comments, the discontinuation of the product lines was "rapid and unanticipated."

A statement from Erie Plastics did hold out some hope for a turnaround. "Several major projects of both proprietary and custom-molding varieties are hoped to be into production later this year, resulting to a return to more normal operations as soon as possible," it said.

Paul "Hoop" Roche Jr., Erie Plastics' chief executive, indicated that layoffs and recalls, unfortunately, are a regular part of the industry.

The sad reality is that 192 Erie Plastics employees suddenly don't have their jobs.
