Layoffs Loom at Faradyne

Faradyne Motors announced Monday that it is laying off 50 of the 80 production workers at the plant in the Silver Hill Tech Park beginning in August.

Twenty temporary workers were let go in May.

The company, a spin off of ITT--the old Gould’s Pumps--makes motors for home water wells. It has lost business with a downturn in the housing market and coupled with bad weather has made for a "perfect storm" of slow business.

Kelly Services, an employment company, staffed Faradyne when it opened in 2005. It will now help workers find new jobs.

Kelly's regional manager Jeannie Burgen said other employers in Wayne County are hiring.

"There are many that may need multiple employees or one or two key employees. So I would think that all of those employees, all 50 or so that may end up leaving Faradyne, will very quickly find suitable employment," she said.

Tax Dollars Invested
Faradyne was given a half million dollar package from the Empire State Development Corporation, including a quarter million up front, for investing in the Newark plant and creating 32 jobs.

Faradyne only gets the other quarter million if it has 132 new jobs by January 2009. If that doesn't happen, the state has a provision to get back the original tax dollars.

Faradyne's president did not want to talk on camera Monday.
