New York experienced an upswing in mass layoffs last month, according to a new report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A mass layoff is defined as a permanent or temporary workforce reduction that affects at least 50 employees. There were 88 mass layoffs across the state in July 2007, compared to 62 in the same month a year ago.

An increase was also noted in the number of employees losing their jobs. Mass layoffs triggered 8,175 claims for unemployment insurance in New York during July 2007. The corresponding figure for July 2006 was 4,837.

Two states had more mass layoffs than New York last month: California with 351 and Michigan with 211. The national total of 1,599 was up from 1,511 a year earlier.
