Layoffs Hit McPherson

Wednesday's announcement that as many as 120 people will lose their jobs at CertainTeed's vinyl siding plant in McPherson isn't good news, but continued job growth could quickly counter that loss.

The company told employees Wednesday that a slowing housing market and reduced demand for vinyl siding were behind the decision to close that manufacturing line, said Marvin Peters, executive director of McPherson Industrial Development Company.

It is set to close on Feb. 2, though some employees might be let go sooner, and others will be allowed to apply for openings in the company's other production facilities in McPherson, he said.
