WHEELING, W.VA - Thousands of workers at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel plants in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania are bracing for the possibility of layoffs next year.
But both the United Steelworkers and Esmark Incorporated say the number and location of those jobs cuts remain undecided.
Ken Aspenlieter (as-pehn-LY'-tur), president of Local 11-90 in Steubenville, Ohio, says all the union locals warned their members by mail this week that restructuring could affect any or all the mills.
He says as many as 300 job cuts are possible.
But the news is not entirely unexpected.
As soon as Esmark and Wheeling-Pitt merged last month, CEO James Bouchard (BOO'-shard) said he would begin work to "right-size" the plants and make them profitable.
Today, he says he remains in active discussions with the union, reviewing all possible plant configurations.
