Layoffs Decrease in Missouri, Illinois

Mass layoffs and initial claims for unemployment insurance decreased in Missouri in July compared with last year, while the number of layoffs decreased but claims increased in Illinois, the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics said Wednesday.

Missouri had 32 layoffs of at least 50 workers and 2,979 unemployment insurance claims, not seasonally adjusted, in July. This compares with 49 mass layoffs and 8,285 claims in July 2005, the agency said in a release.

Illinois had 46 mass layoffs and 7,333 unemployment insurance claims in July, down from 57 layoffs and 6,808 claims in July 2005.

The nation had 1,511 mass layoffs and 166,857 claims in July, down from 1,981 layoffs and 244,216 claims in July 2005.

Automobile manufacturing had the highest number of initial unemployment insurance claims in July, at 16,796, followed by temporary help services, with 11,057.
