The announcement that TRW was temporarily laying off 200 hourly employees at its Rogersville plant has many small businesses concerned about the trickle down effect. “I think a lot of our business comes from TRW,“ says restaurant owner Sandy Harris, “and it’s going to affect all the small businesses here in town.“ Larry Maysilles operates a movie theatre in Rogersville and says he has already seen the effects of job losses in the area. “Definitely,“ he says, “our clientele has dropped way down and we’re trying to hang on.“
A TRW spokesperson says when Chrysler announced it was filing for bankruptcy, it forced the layoffs at the TRW plant in Rogersville. The plant produces steering gears, and with Chrysler idling its vehicle production for 30 to 60 days, it eliminated the need for TRW’s gears. Some people will still work at the Rogersville plant, but their spokesperson says little to no operations will take place. The spokesperson also says it will make the decision to resume operations at the Rogersville plant after they learn more from Chrysler.
The Tennessee Career Center will have representatives on hand at the plant next Thursday to help displaced employees with unemployment applications.
