Mack Trucks announced today that about 450 workers at its Macungie plant will be laid off, which is about 43 percent of the total workforce at that plant.
Mack spokesman Bob Martin said plant workers were prepared for the news.
"We've been very open with them about what our expectations are," he said. "They were very much made aware that we are a cyclical business."
The layoffs are in anticipation of fewer orders for trucks manufactured at the plant because more stringent federal emissions standards are taking effect Jan. 1, a news release from the company said. Truck orders had been up in advance of the new rules.
"We very much regret the impact this action will have on our employees, their families and our local community," Mack President and Chief Executive Officer Paul L. Vikner said in the release.
The Macungie plant employs 1,040 people. The first layoffs will occur before the end of the year with the rest expected at the beginning of next year, the news release said.
