AOL LLC announced in January it was sharpening the job-cutting ax with the goal of eliminating up to 10 percent of its workforce. Now the ax has fallen. AOL began firing employees Monday, including some at its Dulles operations, according to a report in The Washington Post.

AOL, which outlined its intent to cut up to 700 workers in a memo to employees two months ago, declined to say how many Dulles campus workers were affected, but The Post reported that more cuts may be on the way, without citing sources.

AOL has maintained a large employee base in Northern Virginia despite relocating its corporate headquarters from the company’s Dulles birthplace to New York last year, but local payrolls have been slashed by hundreds of jobs as AOL’s fortunes have faltered.

In the January job cut announcement, AOL Chief Executive Officer Randy Falco said, “The deepening economic recession has affected every corner of the economy, including our own. Online marketers have tightened their ad buying across the board, reducing their spending by hundreds of millions of dollars.”
