Springfield, OH - About 300 International Truck and Engine Corp. workers will be laid off Jan. 3 because of declining demand for medium-duty commercial trucks, the company said Friday.
The plant currently employs about 1,300 workers. The layoffs will affect workers in most departments.
Plant spokesman Kyle Rose said the decrease in demand stems from stricter environmental emissions standards that go into effect Jan. 1. The new rules have driven up the cost of the trucks for the Chicago-based company, he said.
Rose said workers at the plant knew layoffs were coming, but the number wasn't known.
"I just hope it's short term," said Charlie Hayden, president of United Auto Workers Local 402, which represents hourly workers at the plant. "I hope the industry picks up and the economy continues to go and we can get these people back to work."
Employment at the plant has steadily declined over the past seven years. In 1999, about 5,200 workers were employed there.
