Inland Label & Marketing Services in La Crosse on Friday announced layoffs at its label division due to lower-than-expected customer orders in 2009.

Company officials declined to say exactly how many employees have been laid off, but in a press release said the number was less than 4 percent of its work force.

Inland has about 250 employees at its two La Crosse locations.

"Unfortunately, due to a reduction in customer demand, we have had to make some difficult choices," company President Mark Glendenning said. "We understand the impact this makes on employees and their families, and we did not come to this decision lightly."

The family-owned company's label division prints more than 20 billion labels annually, primarily for the beverage industry. Its marketing services division provides services such as distribution, packaging and printing for a variety of industries.
