NEW HAVEN, Conn.- A supermarket chain says more than 600 of its Connecticut workers face layoffs when its parent company closes several stores this fall.

Documents filed with the state Labor Department say about 400 employees of A&P supermarkets in Branford, Middletown, Old Lyme and Mystic will lose their jobs.

Nearly 200 others will be laid off from a West Hartford Waldbaum's store, which also is part of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co.

The layoff plans, first reported by the New Haven Register, were filed with the state last week on the same day that Big Y supermarkets announced plans to buy seven A&P stores in Connecticut.

Massachusetts-based Big Y says it will evaluate which sites to reopen as Big Y stores, and that some might remain closed.
