Champion Parts Incorporated in Hope says it will lay off 137 employees, 42 percent of its labor force.
Champion Parts vice president Kevin Cain said a slowdown in orders is behind the layoff. After the layoff, the plant will have 187 workers, down from 324. Cain says there could be a callback if orders pick up.
The company says orders fell off in the last few weeks and the workers were given same-day notice of the layoff last week.
Champion is a remanufacturer of auto and marine parts.
For its 2006 fiscal year, Champion Parts had sales of $18.1 million, down 16.6 percent from a year before.
