SIOUX CITY, IA - About 485 workers will be laid off from a hog processing plant in Sioux City. John Morrell And Company says it will end its second-shift operations at the plant starting February 19. The company says its decision was based on unfavorable market conditions, but no additional details were released.

Joseph Sebring, president of John Morrell, says it is a difficult but necessary decision. He says the company will work diligently to return the employees to work.

The company says about 900 employees will remain at the plant, processing about seven thousand hogs each day.
