Lawmaker meets with Boeing officials over White House plan.

Slashed missile defense budgets could lead to hundreds of job losses for defense workers across North Alabama, U.S. Rep. Parker Griffith, D-Huntsville, said Thursday.

The White House's proposed 2010 Pentagon budget slashes about $2 billion from the Missile Defense Agency's $10 billion a year budget. Most of that money has been targeted to come out of Ground-based Missile Defense - a program that has been winding down its initial development phase - and fledgling, untested programs like the Airborne Laser.

With more than 1,400 people working on it, most of the work on the Ground-based Missile Defense program is performed in Huntsville.

The cuts could lead to job losses in the hundreds, which Griffith vows to fight, but said "is unfortunate, but not unexpected."

Griffith met with Boeing officials Thursday. Boeing did not comment on the proposed cuts, but a memo has been circulated to employees outlining what missile defense programs are under review, but there was not specific talk of job cuts, Griffith's office confirmed to The Times.

The budget process in Washington is ongoing, and several decisions will be made in Congress next week.

"I would like to stress that this is no time to panic," Griffith said Thursday. "We have a committee markup (on Tuesday) that will act as the best opportunity to fight against these cuts, and I am working ... on amendments to reverse these decisions on both Ground-based Missile Defense and Airborne Laser programs."
