Officials with trailer manufacturer Great Dane say they are laying off 108 workers at the company’s Terre Haute, IN, plant this Friday, Oct. 17.

The company officials said the economic downturn and the inability of many small customers to get financing led to the cut back. The Tribune-Star interviewed Brandie Fuller, vice president of marketing for Great Dane, who said layoffs are usually cyclical, but this downturn has been extended.

“With less freight to haul, more expensive fuel to get it there, it has created an environment where there is plenty of equipment to satisfy the current demand and not a need for additional equipment. There is no growth happening at this point of time,” Fuller said.

Great Dane is calling the layoffs “temporary” and still has a work force of 175 at the plant.
